BIOGRAFIA

Joan Garcia Oliver (Reus, 1902 - Guadalajara, Mèxic,1980). Personatge fascinant i injustament oblidat de la història del nostre país. De família molt pobra, emigrant adolescent a la Barcelona de finals de la Primera Guerra Mundial, aviat serà conegut entre els militants de la CNT, en plena efervescència revolucionària de la vaga de La Canadenca, i, com tants altres nois, es convertirà en un anarquista d'acció. En ple episodi històric del "pistolerisme", participarà en diversos atemptats en la guerra desigual amb la patronal i, a partir d'aquell moment, viurà com a revolucionari professional, amb detencions, fugides, exilis i accions violentes.

Detingut i empresonat el 1924, fou alliberat en proclamar-se la República i tornà a Barcelona, on va esdevenir secretari de la FAI. Detingut de nou en diverses ocasions, va sortir de la presó després del triomf del Front Popular i, el juliol del 1936, impulsà la formació del Comitè Català de Milícies Antifeixistes i organitzà la columna Los Aguiluchos, que marxà al front d'Aragó. A més, com a representant de la CNT-FAI, va ser ministre de Justícia durant el govern de Largo Caballero. Exiliat l'any 1939, s'instal·là a Suècia, a Veneçuela i finalment a Mèxic, país on va morir

From his childhood in an extremely poor family in Reus to his years as a gunman in revolutionary Barcelona during the conflict between the employers and anarcho-syndicalism, from his role as an anti-fascist on the Aragon front to Minister of Justice of the Republic, Joan Garcia Oliver (Reus, 1902 - Guadalajara, Mexico, 1980) led a movie-like life, yet today he's a forgotten figure, or more accurately, erased from official memory. Unlike Salvador Seguí, Federica Montseny, or other figures of Catalan anarchism, no street, school, or library bears his name. Only a discreet plaque near his birthplace recalls him, perhaps because, as Xavier Diez asserts in the foreword to this edition of the anarchist's legendary memoirs, ‘even in death, he remains as controversial as he was in life.’ Garcia Oliver, indeed, was never a comfortable figure. Neither when he emerged as one of the natural leaders of the libertarian movement, nor when, after Franco's death, there was speculation about his return.
